Social Media Usage Guide
Introduction

With the advent of digital media, the ability to instantly reach large numbers of people and acquire feedback has been augmented dramatically. Sites like Facebook and Twitter allow a constant flow of information that allows for a larger scope of communication at a lower cost of entry. This sheet is designed to explain how the St. Louis Israel Connection (SLIC) can take advantage of these technologies in it’s effort to grow organizationally and to have an impact in Israel advocacy.

Content

The core of any media campaign should revolve around content. This means that there should be some central hub for this information, be it a blog, a Facebook page, or a website. Links should ideally point to this site whenever possible to keep drawing people back.

It is important to think about what is the message you are creating and what are you drawing people towards? An easy litmus test is that all content should conform with SLIC’s mission statement. This includes content that is linked to.

Platforms

There are various platforms to help disseminate information. The most popular is currently Facebook. With a huge user base and a large number of ways to share information, Facebook should be used in the following ways:

Adding users at fans or friends – this allows us to send them direct messages or invite them to events
Sharing information via personal accounts that link to a SLIC page or that mention SLIC events and activities.
Whenever there is an upcoming SLIC event, invite friends via facebook who you think might be interested and update your status to mention the event.
Encouraging others who share the mission of SLIC to pass the information to their friends
Twitter is a microblogging platform that encourages the instant spread of information. It can be used to send direct messages, post general updates, and mention other users. Most useful is the ability to embed ‘shortened’ URLs (links) into the post. Twitter should be used in the following ways:

If you have a personal account, follow @STLIsrael (twitter.com/stlisrael)
Check for posts from @STLIsrael and Retweet them by copying the entire post and typing RT @STLIsrael in front of it.
Post a quick update mentioning @STLIsrael whenever you are going to a SLIC event, or speaking about something related to SLIC
When you find something interesting that you believe should be posted by the SLIC account:
Go to www.bit.ly and put the full link in the box to shorten it to Twitter size.
Send an email to Heather (hpaperner@jcrcstl.org) containing a sentence about the link and the shortened link from bit.ly.
Heather will post the link.

Youtube is a video hosting site whose videos can often be embedded in other sites or simply shared via a link to the main site. When a movie is worth more than an article, copy the link and send it to Heather with a sentence describing it so that she can post it to Twitter, Facebook, or the website.
