Check out Andy Bachman's blog post http://www.andybachman.com/2010/08/knocked-in-teeth.html?spref=fb
, comparing expiation of sin to having one's teeth cleaned. Clever, albeit a little gross!

I admit up front - this is a sore subject for me. As a former congregational rabbi, I understand the benefit of charging for HH tickets. It's often the number one annual fundraiser for many synagogues.
Now, as a member of the baalei baatim (those of us in the pews), I absolutely cringe at the idea of paying for HH tickets or even the idea that we have tickets. I can't imagine what it's like for a young adult who has some interest in either reconnecting or connecting anew to… Continue

Check out the interesting article in yesterday's New York Time's Magazine (August 22, 2010) about 20 - somethings, now called "emerging adults" .

Professor Steven Cohen wrote a very intriguing article explaining what he’s learning about my generation of Jews: the 30-something post-Boomer up and coming leaders of the Jewish community. What makes this generation so different from the one ahead of us? What’s new and different these days?…

As synagogues see diminishing congregational memberships, it's critical to engage the young professional community to ensure the vitality of the Jewish community in America for generations to come.
Rachel Bregman - NextDor Atlanta
We are the next generation and we are in a whole new worlds. We long for a meaningful life involving a Jewish identity and ache for synagogues to meet us here in this new landscape, but… Continue

How are/can synagogues and spiritual communities engage young Jewish adults? This is the focus of the Next Dor Conversation. We believe that synagogues have a responsibility to do this work of building relationships… Continue

It wasn't until a friend introduced me to Simon Jacobson's books a few years ago that I'd learned that the HHs are part of a much larger cycle about wrongs and forgiveness. Starting today, the 30th of Av, I'm making a list of what I want to change - in relationship to myself, others, and the divine. http://tinyurl.com/2cawjrk… Continue

Well, this isn't what I was planning on writing about today, but I just saw a tweet to an article that... wow - don't even know that I have words.
If you're not in New York, you've probably missed most of the debate over the Cordoba House, an Islamic community center (compared to JCCs with swimming pool and gym) which also houses a mosque.
I'm not even going to try and sum up the back and forths, suffice to say it's been getting nastier and… Continue

Today @ my synagogue the Rabbis kept talking about that heavy topic, The Future of Judaism.
Rabbi seems to believe that if more Wealthy Jews would donate large sums of money to the synagogues (like Wealthy Christians donate to their Mega-Churches) then there would be a larger, more exciting, more active Jewish life.
And I think that's wrong.
It can't all be about the benjamins! I think its about the people. I know I'd be more active in Judaism if… Continue

An average Monday it seems to me - following Sunday, preceding Tuesday. Kinda normal. Except apparently, according to the calendar, it's not. Tisha B'Av starts tonight - and please forgive any inaccuracies in the understanding of said holiday - it's not one I've brushed up on recently (and frankly hadn't heard of until a couple of years ago). So, as far as I understand it, the idea is that we're in mourning for the destruction of the first and second Temples. Ok.... Since that doesn't have much… Continue
